The Truth About African American Folk Magic
Hoodoo is not witchcraft.
If you’ve ever searched “what is Hoodoo” or wondered if it’s the same as Voodoo — let’s clear that up now. Hoodoo is African American folk spirituality. It’s not a religion. It’s not Wicca. It’s not witchcraft. Hoodoo is a system of spiritual protection, manifestation, and healing created by enslaved Africans in the American South.
Our ancestors blended West African spiritual traditions with the tools they had — herbs, fire, prayers, Psalms, roots, and their deep connection to God. Hoodoo is how we survived. And it’s how we keep our power to this day.
What’s the difference between Hoodoo and Voodoo?
A common question people ask is: Hoodoo vs. Voodoo — what’s the difference?
Voodoo is a religion with rituals and initiations, most common in Haiti and Louisiana Creole culture.
Hoodoo is not a religion — it’s a practice.
It’s folk magic, passed down in Black families, often rooted in Christianity and the Bible. It’s personal. It’s powerful. And for many of us, it’s sacred.
What do people use Hoodoo for?
Hoodoo is used for:
-
Money drawing (using hoodoo oils and candles)
-
Protection and clearing (with incense and fixed candles)
-
Love and confidence work (spiritual baths, oils, and charms)
-
Ancestral communication
-
Breaking bad luck and removing spiritual blocks
The tools are simple — candles, oils, incense, roots — but the intention is everything. We pray over them. We fix them. We use them to call in what we need.
Who I Am
My name is Monique, and I’m the founder of Geechee Mama Candles. I’m a Black woman, a registered nurse, and a Geechee descendant raised in this work. My grandmother taught me to use sacred oils and Psalms when I was still learning to read. This isn’t something I picked up online. This is in my blood.
Today, I create authentic hoodoo candles, spiritual oils, and protection tools — fixed by hand, prayed over, and rooted in tradition. I don’t make aesthetic candles. I make ritual tools. And I don’t teach Hoodoo — I serve those who are already called to it.
Why It Matters
Unfortunately, Hoodoo has been exploited. Many online shops and influencers now sell “hoodoo candles” with no cultural connection, no integrity, and no understanding of the risks or responsibilities.
Geechee Mama is different. Everything you see here is made by me — a real hoodoo practitioner and descendant of Gullah Geechee ancestors. I don’t use glitter for show. I use it to catch light. I don’t make oils for smell. I fix them to shift energy.
