She Eats First money drawing hoodoo ritual candle in deep forest green glass

The Ancestral Roots of Prosperity Work in Hoodoo

Money work in this tradition did not start with a vision board.

It started with people who were not allowed to own anything, working out how to hold on to a little of what passed through their hands anyway. That is the honest root of it. Prosperity work in Hoodoo came up in houses where the math did not work and somebody made it work regardless.

What the women in my family called it

They did not call it prosperity work. They did not call it anything. They just did it.

My grandmother could take not enough and turn it into we good, without panic and without shame. A dollar went further in her hands than it went in anybody else's. Some of that was arithmetic. Some of it was the way she talked to the money, and to God about the money, and to whoever was standing in the kitchen about both.

Nobody wrote any of it down. I got it by being in the room.

What the work actually looks like

A green candle lit on a Thursday. Oil on the hands before you go handle business. A dressed dollar that stays in the wallet and does not get spent, no matter what.

None of it replaces the work. It goes alongside the job, the budget, the phone call you have been putting off. In this house the root and the hand move together. Nobody in my line ever lit a candle instead of going to work.

That is the part that gets left out when this gets repackaged. The old workers were not waiting on abundance to arrive. They were stretching what they had and asking for a little help doing it.

Why mine is called She Eats First

She Eats First is named for the habit of feeding everybody else and getting to yourself last, if there is anything left.

It is deep forest green rather than the bright green you see on most money candles. Light green in this work runs toward fast luck. Deep green is the other kind, the money that stays, the kind you can build something on.

I pair it with Open Hands through the week. The candle is for the sitting down. The oil is for the wallet and the door on an ordinary Tuesday.

If you are starting

Pick one thing and be consistent with it rather than picking five and doing none of them twice.

A dressed dollar in your wallet is enough to start, and it costs you a dollar.
