Candle Colors in Hoodoo: What Each One Carries

Walk into any candle shop in the tradition and the shelves speak in color before a single label gets read. Color is shorthand in Hoodoo candle work. It tells the candle its assignment before the first prayer goes in. Here is what each color carries, the way the tradition holds it.

White

Peace, cleansing, blessing, and clarity. White is also the tradition's substitute: if the color you need is not on hand, a white candle can be fixed to stand in for any work. When in doubt, white.

Red

Love with heat in it. Desire, passion, vitality, courage. Red is the color of drawing somebody close and of finding your nerve. I wrote a whole piece on it in What Red Candles Mean in Hoodoo, and our love work candle is Pull Up.

Pink

The softer side of love. Sweetening, reconciliation, self-regard, gentleness after hard seasons. Pink handles the assignments red would run too hot for. Walk In the Room lives here.

Green

Money and steady increase, the kind that grows. Green work is planted work, tended like a garden. She Eats First is our money drawing candle, and Open Hands is the oil that pairs with it.

Gold and yellow

Favor, success, and doors opening because your name arrived before you did. Burned before interviews, auditions, court dates, and the rooms where you need to be seen right.

Purple

Power and mastery. The color of commanding a situation and standing on what you said.

Blue

Peace, healing, protection, and calm water. Blue runs deep in Gullah Geechee tradition: it is the haint blue on porch ceilings all through the Lowcountry, painted to keep restless spirits from crossing in. I told that story in Haint Blue Porch Ceilings.

Black

Removal. Black candles take things off: crossed conditions, bad attachments, old messes that need ending, and whatever refuses to leave on its own. Outsiders gave black candles a scary reputation, and inside the tradition they are simply the heavy-duty cleaning supplies. Break Every Chain, our Blockbuster, works that lane.

The color is the beginning

Color sets the direction, and the fixing does the work. A red candle from the dollar store is just red wax until somebody loads it with purpose, which is why every candle here is dressed and prayed over before it ships. If you are new to that idea, start with What Are Spiritual Candles, and if you know your condition and want the match, use What Candle to Burn For.
