My family keeps a long memory when it comes to paper. Papers moved land and papers moved labor, and there was a time in this country when papers moved people. So the old folks never treated a signature as small, and neither do I. When your name goes on a lease or a contract, you are binding yourself to a place and to terms. This house treats that as spiritual business, because it is. Here is how I prepare before I sign anything that matters.
Do Your Natural Work First
The work in this tradition rides alongside your footwork. It does not replace it. Read every line of the agreement, twice, and ask your questions in writing so the answers live somewhere you can point to. If real money is on the table, pay a professional to read it with you. My grandmother held that Spirit favors the one who came prepared, and I have never seen that proven wrong.
Sweep Before You Sign
You do not carry mess into a new agreement. Before decision day, clear the place where the thinking gets done. In Hoodoo practice, incense is a form of spiritual sweeping. Light a stick of Clear The Air and carry the smoke through your doorways and past your windows. Let it pull the old weight out with it. If the paper is for a new home and you can stand inside it before signing, walk the rooms and notice how the place sits on you. A house tells on itself if you listen.
Write the Petition
The petition is the stated ask, the words that tell the work its job. Before you sign, write what you need this agreement to be. Plain words, your own words. A fair landlord and a dry ceiling. Light for the Open Road
A new agreement is a door, and doors are road opening work. Set your petition beneath Clear My Path, our fixed road opener candle, and light it with the ask in your mouth. In this house, road work favors a Sunday or a Wednesday, and the New Moon is planting time for something just beginning. Work in sessions if your schedule calls for it. Snuff the flame when you pause rather than blowing it out, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
Check the Feeling at the Table
The women I come from respected the drag. If your spirit slows down every time your hand reaches for the pen, that is information. Slow down with it. Ask one more question or sleep one more night. A blessing does not need to be chased, and paper that is meant for you will still be there in the morning. I have walked away from ink that looked good on the surface and thanked Spirit for it later.
After the Ink
When the signing is done, give thanks out loud. Keep your copy somewhere respected, with your important papers, away from clutter and spills. If the agreement handed you keys, anoint the front doorway with Covered & Kept so the threshold is sealed from the first night. Then do what the contract asks of you and let the work hold the rest.
