Never Work Love Angry

If the old folks left one rule about love work, it is this one: never work love angry. Not hurt-and-crying angry, not prove-him-wrong angry, not I-will-show-her angry. The tradition is unanimous on it, and here is why the rule exists and how to honor it.

Anger changes the assignment

A petition is loaded with whatever you are carrying when you speak it. Love work spoken through clenched teeth stops being drawing work and starts leaning toward control, toward winning, toward making somebody feel it. That is a different lane of work entirely, it is a lane this house does not walk, and most people standing in anger do not actually want what that lane delivers. They want the hurt to stop. Those are different petitions.

Cool down like it is part of the ritual

Because it is. Give it days, not minutes. Take the bath and let the water carry the sharpness off, the full practice being in How to Take a Spiritual Bath. Say the unsaid things to a page instead of a person. Move your body until the speech you were rehearsing gets boring. The work will still be there when you are, and work that cannot wait three days for a clear heart was never ready to be worked.

Listen to what the anger knows

Anger is information before it is a problem. Sometimes it is telling you a boundary got crossed and the work you need is protection, not love. Sometimes it is grief wearing a louder outfit, and the work is release, which is Cut & Clear territory. And sometimes it is telling you to go read When to Do Love Work and When to Leave Him Alone one more time, slower.

Then work clean

When the heat has passed and the petition still stands, work it clean: the mending lane in Sweetening After an Argument, or the drawing lane with Pull Up set from a settled heart. Love work done from peace draws peace. That is the whole teaching.

Cool first, then light. The love work teachings go out on the email list at the bottom of this page.
