Every week somebody writes to me about a man. Sometimes the question is which candle. More often the real question underneath is whether to work at all. The women in my family could look at a situation once and tell you which one it was. That discernment is as much a part of this tradition as any root or oil, so let me teach it the way it was handed to me.
What Love Work Is and What It Does
In Hoodoo, love work is drawing work and sweetening work. It calls attention back to where it belongs and it softens what a hard season made bitter. The work moves with your faith and your footwork, and it moves what is willing to move. Anybody promising you a guaranteed man is selling you something other than this tradition.
When the Candle Is Right
Work when there is something real to work with. A connection that went quiet but never went cold. A distance you both feel and neither of you has named. In those situations the road is there and the work helps you walk it. Time it the old way, Friday for matters of the heart and the Waxing Moon for drawing closer. The fuller teaching on timing is here: The Best Time for Love Work.
When to Leave Him Alone
Leave him alone when he told you who he is and you heard him. Leave him alone when your peace comes back the minute he walks out the door, because your own spirit runs that accounting whether you ask it to or not. And if the petition you want to write would need him to become a different man entirely, put the pen down. This work draws and it sweetens. It does not build you a person from scratch.
The old folks warned about holding what Spirit is prying out of your hands. If every road you open closes back and the work stalls no matter how clean your timing is, sometimes the answer has already been given. I wrote about reading the stalls here: Why Love Work Stalls and What to Check.
Never Work It Angry
Whatever you decide, do not light anything with rage in your hands. Anger crosses your own work before it ever leaves the table. Take a cleansing bath first and let the water carry the heat off you. Come back when your hands are steady. The full teaching lives here: Never Work Love Angry.
The Candle That Might Really Be Calling You
Here is what I have watched over and over. A woman comes asking for Come To Me work, and what her spirit is starved for is her own attention. If you have been shrinking, if the mirror has been talking to you sideways, start with Walk In the Room, our self love candle, before you burn anything for anybody else. The work you do on your own worth is the ground every other love work stands on. Some women in my lineage never needed to be told they were enough. The rest of us light a candle and remember.
All Geechee Mama pieces are offered as spiritual curios. I do not promise outcomes, here or anywhere in this house.
