Conjure is the old American name for the work. It is the practice of moving spirit through material things: roots, candles, water, and cloth, joined to prayer and intention. The word and where it comes from
Conjure lived in the mouths of enslaved Africans and their children. The conjure man and the conjure woman were the people a community turned to when trouble needed more than what the visible world offered. They carried knowledge across the Middle Passage and rebuilt it here with the plants of this land and the Bible on the table. One of the most famous was Dr. Buzzard of St. Helena Island, and I wrote his story in The Gullah Geechee's Dr. Buzzard.
Three words, one tradition
Hoodoo names the tradition itself, the whole inheritance. Rootwork names the plant side of it, the roots and herbs and the doctors who worked them, covered fully in What Is Rootwork. Conjure names the working, the act of putting spirit to task. In practice the old folks used all of these words for the same living thing, and so do I.
What conjure is to us
Witchcraft is its own path with its own history and its own people. Conjure grew from African American life, scripture in one hand and roots in the other, shaped by people who needed protection, justice, healing, and open roads in a country that offered them none of it freely. Conjure today
The work never stopped. It moved from the crossroads to the kitchen table and it is still done with the same materials: a candle fixed for a purpose, an oil prepared with prayer, a bag sewn and sealed for one person.
